Artist Statement:
I respond to certain visual
qualities that may be referred to as metapatterns. Metapatterns are patterns
of patterns, such as lines, spheres, tubes, sheets, layers, that appear
everywhere: in plants, clouds, rivers, and planets; in cells, organisms,
and ecosystems; in art and architecture, even politics. They are functional
universals for forms in space, processes in time, and concepts in mind.
The truth about trees is
that they are vitally important. From the late 1970’s aerial views which
compared the differences of European and American city structures,
including the floral work of the 1980’s which ultimately focused on the
roses that I grew through the 1990’s, to the present content of webs and
trees, my work is a response to the patterns of what I feel is important
and necessary. Simultaneously it is a meditation on the fragile yet enduring
nature of life. Balancing shifts of scale, and using a variety of media,
the images of bits and fragments from the familiar environs of my garden,
filtered through my physical and psychological perceptions, rather than
being simple portraits of nature, are a diary of intimate experience.
